Why A Meaningful Name is Important
During the early 1980's, when Gungnir Research was formed, there had been a great
deal of fraud in scientific research in the U.S. We wanted to choose a name which
would represent truth and integrity.
Why Gungnir?
Gungnir (pronounced goongk nur) is the name of the spear of Odin, chief god of the Norsemen, and it was the custom of the Norse to swear their oaths upon
their spears in the same manner that we today take an oath with a hand upon the
Bible. In Norse mythology, it was impossible to swear a false oath upon the spear of
Odin, Gungnir. Therefore, Gungnir Research was another way of implying that we do not
falsify research. We tell the truth.
A happy secondary connotation of Gungnir is that it was part of the Norse myth that Gungnir always hit its mark. That, we shall not claim, but we do our best.
